Golden Gopher Women's Swimming & Diving Defeats Iowa State

The Minnesota women's swimming and diving team opened its 2003-04 season with 195-102 dual-meet victory over Iowa State at the University Aquatic Center on Saturday. The Golden Gophers won 12 of the 16 events contested.
Highlighting the Golden Gophers' performances were record-breaking times in four events, the 100-yard freestyle, 100-yard butterfly, 3-meter diving and the 200-yard medley relay. The relay of Megan Moore, Melissa Schold, Sarah Bohlsen and Katy Coombe opened the meet by setting a new meet record in a time of 1 minute, 35.48 seconds. The previous record was 1:46.98 set by Minnesota in 2002.
"Winning that event was one of our team goals coming into this meet," said Golden Gopher head coach Jean Freeman. "We were thrilled (with the record time)."
In addition to helping the relay to its winning performance, Bohlsen and Coombe also posted top finishes and broke meet records in individual events. Bohlsen won the 100 fly in a time of 56.20, bettering her own record o 56.57 set in 2001.
Coombe won the 100 free in a time of 51.71, breaking an 11-yard old record of 52.10 set by Iowa State's Jenny Kollbaum in 1992.
Rebecca Cornthwaite captured first place finishes in both diving events, setting a new meet record in the 3-meter diving with a total of 394.83, and winning the 1-meter diving with 276.68 points.
In addition to her relay performance, Moore won individual titles in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.02 and the 200 back in 2:04.36.
"I was very happy with how people swam and how the divers performed," said Freeman. "It was a good season-opening meet for us."
The Golden Gophers host North Carolina and North Dakota on Nov. 7-8, in their next action.
