Perkins and Steidl Named to NCBWA Preseason All-American Team

Perkins was a second team preseason All-American as a starting pitcher, while Steidl was a third team preseason All-American as a centerfielder.
Last season Perkins was named a second team Collegiate Baseball All-American and was one of four Collegiate Baseball Freshmen of the Year. He was also named to the Baseball America Freshmen All-American team. In 2003, Perkins went 10-2 with a 2.91 ERA and set a school record for single-season strikeouts at 117. He won all eight starts in Big Ten play to become the first player in the conference's history to finish 8-0 in Big Ten play. Perkins also struck out 77 batters in the Big Ten, which was the second-highest total in conference history.
Steidl finished second on the team in batting average last season at .367 and led the Big Ten in hits with 87 on the season. He was also eighth in the conference in batting average and ninth in on-base percentage. Steidl was named first team All-Big Ten last season. He has been selected to the All-Big Ten team in his first three seasons at Minnesota (first team in 2003, third team in 2002, second team in 2001). Steidl enters the 2004 season tied for 10th on the Minnesota career batting average list at .359.
Last season Minnesota had two All-Americans in Perkins and Luke Appert.
Minnesota will host the Pro-Alumni Game on Monday, Feb. 9 at 6:30 p.m. The Golden Gophers will open up the regular season on Friday, Feb. 27 at Florida Atlantic.
