The Buckeyes broke away from a 39-39 tie with an offensive spurt, scoring on 9-of-10 possessions, coupled with defense and Gopher turnovers that held Minnesota without a field goal for five minutes. Ohio State took its biggest lead of 16 points at 61-45, before the Gophers cut the deficit in half as the game ended.
The Gophers played a solid first half and took a 28-24 lead into the lockerroom, despite having Lindsay Whalen on the bench for all but seven minutes of the half. Jane McCarville established a powerful presence in the paint, nearly collecting a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds by halftime.
McCarville finished the game with her fourth double-double of the season and 11th of her career. She tallied 15 points and 12 rebounds, while dishing out a career-high six assists on the night. Corrin Von Wald was the only other Gopher in double figures with 12 points.
Whalen hindered by foul trouble in the first half and strategic box-in-one or triangle-and-two defenses in the second half finished with a career-low five points on just 1-of-5 field goal attempts.
Freshman point guard Shannon Schonrock came off the bench to tie a career-high with nine points, all of them coming on three-point field goals.
Minnesota continues its three-game road stretch with a contest at Indiana on Sunday. Tipoff is set for 12 noon (CT) and will be televised live on Fox Sports North.
