tThe Minnesota Baseball Team (36-18, 23-6), split a doubleheader with Ohio State (37-16, 20-11) winning the first game 5-2, and dropping the second game 5-1 on Saturday, May 17 at Siebert Field. With the win in the first game the Golden Gophers recorded their 23rd Big Ten victory, which is the third most conference victories by any team in Big Ten history.

In the first game, senior righthander C.J. Woodrow (Plymouth, Minn.) recorded his 16th career Big Ten victory to break the school record formerly held by Steve Comer (1973-76) at 15 wins. Woodrow pitched a complete game going seven innings, giving up six hits, two runs and striking out seven batters to pick up the victory. With the win he moved to 7-3 on the season. Ohio State's Josh Newman gave up five runs in six innings to fall to 5-5.

Ohio State went up 1-0 in the top of the first inning on a Christian Snavely RBI groundout. Sam Steidl (Alexandria, Minn.) led off the bottom of the first with a walk and moved to second on a balk. With one out Luke Appert (Cottage Grove, Minn.) walked to make it first and second. After the Buckeyes recorded the second out of the inning, Scott Welch (Missoula, Mon.) struck with a three-run homer to right field to move Minnesota up 3-1.

In the second inning, Tony Leseman (St. Paul, Minn.) led off with a double to left field. After he was sacrificed to third by Steidl, Ben Pattee (Ukiah, Calif.) doubled home Leseman to make it 4-1. The double was Pattee's 13th in Big Ten play, tying four different players for the school record.

Minnesota added another run in the bottom of the third when Jon Becker (Plato, Minn.) led off the inning with a triple and came around to score on an RBI groundout by David Hrncirik (Madison, Wis.) to make it 5-1.

Offensively Welch led the way in the first game going one for two with a homer and three RBI. Pattee and Hrncirik also collected RBI in the game.

In the second game Minnesota junior Jay Gagner (Cumberland, Wis.) and Ohio State's Mike Madsen started out by pitching three shutout innings to begin the game. Ohio State jumped on the board first in the top of the fourth when Snavely hit a two-run homer to make it 2-0.

The Buckeyes scored three more in the fifth, with two coming on a throwing error with the bases loaded, to make the score 5-0. Minnesota would scored its only run in the bottom of the sixth when Andy Hunter doubled to right centerfield, advanced to third on a wild pitch and came around to score on a Hrncirik ground out to make it 5-1.

Madsen pitched five and a thirds innings, giving up one run and picked up the victory to move to 6-1 on the season. Gagner took the loss to fall to 4-5 on the season, pitching four and a third innings, giving up three runs and striking out three.

Steidl was three-for-four in the second game, while Hunter was two for three with a run.

Minnesota also retired the legendary Paul Giel's jersey in a pre-game ceremony, which included Giel's family, Minnesota head coach John Anderson and Minnesota Director of Athletics Joel Maturi.
