Endowments Solidify Future of Golden Gophers Golf Program

Wrong. James presented McNamara with an NCAA championship ring, a thank you for McNamara's efforts in leading a drive to save the men's and women's golf and men's gymnastics programs. The three programs had been marked for elimination in April 2002, by former university president Mark Yudof because of athletic department budget shortfalls.
Shortly after the Gophers men's golf team captured the 2002 NCAA national championship, coach Brad James invited university alum Bob McNamara to stop by his office to receive a gift.
