Gopher Women Win Sunday in Iowa City 172-127

The Gopher Women's swimming and diving team capped off three consecutive days of competition with a win against conference rival Iowa. Minnesota seized an earlier advantage thanks to a strong opening performance from the divers who took the top three spots in the 1 and 3 M diving competitions.

Shannon Jackson led all divers with a score of 280.05 in the 1 M competition. Abbie Bowden earned a second place finish scoring 270.75, while Rebecca Cornthwaite followed close behind with 267.75, a third place finish. Cornthwaite imporved to first place in the 3 M compition scoring 286.80. Jackson captured second (273.60) and Bowden, third with a score of 260.85.

Senior Melissa Schold improved upon her performance in Madison in the breaststroke finishing first in both the 100 (1:04.22) and 200 (2:20.20). Julia Quinn added to the Gophers success earning a third place finish in the 100 (1:07.04) while Bridget McCoy placed third in the 200 (2:23.96).

Following a solid performance of the backstroke in Madison yesterday, senior Megan Moore found enough endurance to remain on pace in Iowa City. Moore captured a second place finish in the 100 back clocking a time of 58.06. She improved to a first place finish in the 200 in a time of 2:04.15.

Moreover, the 1000 yard freestyle proved kind to the Gophers as freshman Valerie Tukey clocked a first place time of 10:20.16. Tukey also swam well in the 500 free finishing second (5:00.52). Juleen Rodakowski came in second place in the 1000 free with a time of 10:24.97.

Rodakowski continued a solid afternoon leading the way in the 200 butterfly (2:04.98). Sarah Sofelt finished in third place (2:07.50). Sarah Bohlson captured a first place finish in the 100 fly with a time of 58.07. Abby Reuss finished third (59.30).

Capturing three of the top five finishes in the 50 free kept the confidence flowing for the Gophers. Sophomore Sarah Perrott earned the top spot in a time of 23.94. Jennifer Hastling finished second (24.03) and Sarah Vine, fifth (24.47). Perrott remained focused for the 100 free finishing second (52.14) just behind teammmate Katy Coombe (52.13). Vine placed fifth in this event (52.84). Perrott, Coombe, Vine, and teammate Jennifer Hastling took the top spot in the 200 free relay (1:35.12).

Look for the Gophers in action next weekend as the host in Minnesota Challenge at the University Aquatic Center.
