Gophers Impressive in 400 Free Relay at NCAA Championships

DWith the last day of the NCAA Championships underway at the Nassau Aquatics Center, the Gophers realized their last opportunity to perform well was staring them in the face. Previously, coach Dennis Dale expressed hope that his team would finish strong, earning points in today's freestyle events. He would not be disappointed as with this afternoon's performance.

The 400 free relay marks a strength for the Gophers and in today's preliminary session, they captured third place, Minnesota's best finish thus far for the three day competition. The All-American team of Mario Delac, Terry Silkaitis, Adam Mitchell, and Igor Cerensek clocked an impressive time of 3:14.35. They will represent the Gophers in the finals session this evening.

Additionally, Silkaitis, secured All-American honors in the 100 free, leading the Gophers in this event by capturing an eighth place finish (48.18) in the prelims. He will compete in this evening's finals session. Honorable mention All-American Delac (48.61), finished in 15th place and will participate in the consolation finals. Teammates Cerensek (49.01) and Neil Osten (49.77) placed 19th and 35th respectively.

In the 200 backstroke, the Gophers were represented by sophomore Mitchell and senior Diego Urreta. Mitchell clocked a time of 1:58.02, a 21st place finish, while Urreta (1:58.47) finished in 24th.

Competition concludes tonight at 6 p.m. CT at the Nassau Aquatic Center.
