Gophers Finish Ninth at NCAA Championships
Minnesota finished the 2003-04 season with a ninth-place showing at the 2004 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, held in Long Island, N.Y. The Golden Gophers qualified 12 swimmers to the NCAA Championships, where nine earned 22 All-America certificates. To earn first-team All-America status, swimmers must finish in the top eight in each event, while honorable mentions are in the top 16.
First Time For Everything
Igor Cerensek, Mario Delac, Sean Kelly, Adam Mitchell, Ales Volcansek and Zach Wood all competed in their first NCAA Championships. Travis Beckerle, Sean McCaffrey and Neil Osten made their second trip to the national championship. Ryan Plummer, Terry Silkaitis and Diego Urreta are the seasoned veterans on the team making their third appearance to the NCAAs.
Silkaitis Earns Six All-America Certificates
Junior freestyler Terry Silkaitis competed in seven events at the 2004 NCAA Championships, walking away with six All-America certificates. With his seven entries, Silkaitis earned 34 of Minnesota's 130 team points. With his six certificates at the 2004 championships, Silkaitis has earned 18 in his three-year tenure at Minnesota. Silkaitis had five his freshman season, seven in his sophomore campaign and six last year.
