MTF: Team Announces Captains and 2006 Schedule

Albert was the high jump champion at the 2005 Big Ten Outdoor Championships, adding an outdoor title to the indoor crown he captured in 2004. He ranks ninth on the list of Minnesota’s all-time best high jumpers, having cleared a height of 7 feet, 1 3/4 inches. The Bloomington, Minn. native is also a two-time Academic All-American.
Erickson returns to action this season after redshirting the 2005 campaign. From 2002-2004, he earned three All-America citations in the shot put and one in the discus. He is also a three-time Big Ten discus champion. The Zumbro Falls, Minn. native boasts a career-best shot put of 63-8 3/4 and career-best discus mark of 197-7.
Netzer also returns to competition after a redshirt season in 2005. He is a two-time Big Ten high jump champion, earning outdoor titles in 2002 and 2004. Netzer also took All-America honors in 2004 by finishing eighth at the NCAA Championships. The Rib Lake, Wis. native has the fourth-best high jump mark in school history, clearing 7-3 1/4.
Newman is a three-time letterwinner who has now fully recovered from a leg injury in 2002. He set personal-best marks in the 100-meter dash (10.71) and the long jump (23-0) in 2005. The former Apple Valley, Minn. resident also anchored the 4x100-meter relay team last year.
Riter is a two-time participant in the NCAA Outdoor Championships, competing in the 800-meter run. He has recorded the second-fastest indoor (1:50.29) and third-fastest outdoor (1:48.20) 800-meter times in school history. The Shoreview, Minn. native is also a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
The Gopher men’s track team opens the indoor season with the Northwest Open at the U of M Fieldhouse on Jan. 7, 2006. After hosting three consecutive home meets, Minnesota travels to Madison, Wis. to compete against the Badgers, the defending Big Ten Indoor Champions, at the Wisconsin Classic on Jan. 26. The indoor season culminates on Feb. 25-26 with Big Ten Indoor Championships at Iowa City, Iowa.
Outdoor competition kicks off starting March 17-18 with the Bay Area Blast Off in San Francisco, Calif. During the outdoor season, the Gophers will face top talent from the SEC at the LSU Open on March 31-April 1 and then compete against the PAC 10’s best at the Oregon Invitational on April 22. Minnesota travels to East Lansing, Mich. for the Big Ten Outdoor Championships on May 12-14.
