WSD: No. 23 Gophers Win 169-131 Against Iowa

woThe 23rd-ranked University of Minnesota women's swimming and diving team won its second dual of the season and the first Big Ten win of the year tonight, defeating Iowa in Iowa, City. The Gophers won by a score of 169-131. Minnesota won seven events during the evening.

Minnesota started the night with a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. Minnesota's relay of Katie Wind, Mary Patrek, Krista Kezbers and Sarah Perrott clocked a time of 1:47.08. However, Iowa opened the meet winning the event in 1:46.27. Although the Gophers dropped the first event, Minnesota stormed back with a win in the next two events. Yuen Kobayashi earned her first win of the evening in the 1000-yard freestyle. Kobayashi touched the wall in 9:59.27, while Valerie Tukey placed second in 10:19.98. Meredith McCarthy continued the Gophers winning ways with a first-place finish in the 200 free. McCarthy won the event in 1:53.18, followed by teammate Christine Jennings in 1:53.24. Kate Hardt finished third overall with a time of 1:53.54.

Wind finished the 100 backstroke in a time of 57.79, but Iowa's Kelly Werner completed the event in a time of 56.80 to finish first. Jenny Hasling placed fourth overall with a time of 59.22. Patrek led the team in the 100 breaststroke, finishing second with a time of 1: 06.13. Kait Strickland finished second in the 200 fly (2:07.99) and Danielle Ridder finished third in 2:08.65.

Minnesota dominated the 50 free, placing three Gophers in the top three spots. Erin Holtmeyer won the event in 24.02, followed by Sarah Perrott in second (24.16) and Jennifer Hasling in third (24.43). Perrott followed her second-place finish with a win in the 100 free. Perrott touched the wall in 52.21. McCarthy finished third (52.43) and Holtmeyer finished fourth (52.72) in the event. Like the 100 events, Wind and Patrek led the Gophers in the 200 back and breaststroke events. Wind finished in a time of 2:05.18 in the 200 back and Patrek clocked a time of 2:25.40 in the 200 breast.

Kobayashi earned her second win of the evening, this time in the 500 free. Kobayashi finished in a time of 4:55.71. Jennings finished second with a time of 5:00.70 and Hardt third in 5:00.76. Jenny Shaughnessy won her first event as a Gopher, winning the 200 individual medley in 2:08.00. Hardt finished second in the event with a time of 2:08.89 and Ridder finished fourth overall in 2:09.76. The swimmers' ended the night with a first- place finish in the 400 free relay. Kobayashi, McCarthy, Perrott and Holtmeyer combined for a time of 3:23.73 to win the event. Iowa finished with a time of 3:32.06.

In the diving well, Minnesota had two divers compete in the 1-meter and 3-meter events, placing in the top three. Brianna Hubbard led the Gophers with a second-place finish in both the 1 and 3-meter. Hubbard scored 250.50 points in the 1-meter and a score of 268.50 in the 3-meter. Erica Schiffler placed third overall with a score of 235.40 in the 1- meter and 235.65 in the three-meter. Iowa's Nancilea Underwood won each event with scores of 300.90 in the 1-meter and 365.78 in the 3-meter.

Minnesota returns to action next weekend as the Gophers face 16th-ranked Indiana on Oct. 29. The meet, which is held at the University Aquatic Center, will begin at 1 p.m.
