Gophers Hold Convincing Lead at Minnesota Invite

The No. 9 University of Minnesota men’s swimming and diving team holds a
convincing
1122.5 lead in the Minnesota Invitational, held at Minnesota’s University Aquatic
Center.
The Gophers hold the top spot, while Wisconsin is in second with a score of 564.5
and
North Dakota is third with a score of 206. Minnesota closes out the invite tomorrow
afternoon at 3 p.m.


The Gophers earned their first win of the evening in the 200 medley relay.

Osten and Mario Delac clocked a time of
1:29.67 for the win over
Minnesota’s B team of David Plummer Colin
Lee-To, Dan Berve and Igor
Cerensek. The B
team finished the event with a time of 1:30.45.


Russ Payne finished first in the
400 individual medley with a time of 4:00.48. Fabian Toth
finished fifth in the same event with a time of 4:10.07. The Gophers took the top two
spots in the 100 fly when Dan Berve won the event in
49.63. Mitchell held a close second
with a time of 49.85. Minnesota then took the top three spots in the 200 freestyle.
Igor
Cerensek won the event in a time of 1:40.15, while Evan
Bernier finished second in a time
of 1:40.57. Travis Beckerle touched the wall
in 1:40.90 for a third-place showing.


Mitchell returned to the pool to win the 100 backstroke in a time of 49.55, leading a
group of four Gophers in the finals. Berve was second in 50.15 and Mike Woodson
was third in 50.50.


The Gophers dominated the 100 breaststroke event, placing four swimmers in the A
Final
and the top four spots. Lee-To won the event in a time of 56.27, followed by Drew
Knoechel in 56.78. Jason Timmer chipped in a time
of 57.22 for third place, while Sean
Kelly finished fourth overall in a time of 57.83. Mitchell took home the top spot in the
100
back (49.55), while Berve placed second (50.15) and Mike Woodson placed third
(50.50).


The Gophers rounded out the night with a win in the 800 free relay. Tyler
Schmidt,
Woodson, Mitchell and Cerensek won the event with a time of 6:38.72.


In diving action, Shaun Kennedy won the 3-meter
event with a score of 329.55. John
Schmidt finished second with a score of 326.50, followed by Cole
Young (308.95) and Joe
Skeate (293.85).
