Janel McCarville dominated the paint with 21 points and 15 rebounds to lead No. 14/16 Minnesota to a 76-55 victory at Michigan on Sunday. The double-double is McCarville's 10th of the season and 43rd of her career.
The Golden Gophers (18-4, 8-2 Big Ten) also received important contributions from their bench with Liz Podominick adding 14 points and Kelly Roysland 12.
"This was a great team win for us," said Golden Gopher head coach Pam Borton. "We needed some players to step up when we had two starters out and we had people answer the call."
Minnesota scored the first five points of the game on a Jamie Broback lay-in and a three-pointer by Shannon Schonrock. Just three minutes into the game, however, Shannon Bolden was whistled for her second foul and headed to the bench for rest of the half.
The Gophers' second starter was forced to leave the game two minutes later, when Jamie Broback twisted her left ankle defending a drive on Michigan's Tabitha Pool. Pool scored on the play giving the Wolverines their last lead of the game at 10-8.
With two starters out of the game, the Gophers put together a 16-4 run to take a 10-point lead at 24-14. Minnesota opened the run with four consecutive three-point field goals, two of them by Katie Alsdurf. Podominick scored eight points in the first half as the Gophers held a 33-27 lead at halftime.
Minnesota shot 75 percent in the second half to take control of the game. McCarville made 6-of-7 shot attempts and scored 14 points after intermission. Kelly Roysland scored eight of her points in the second half and extended her streak of consecutive free throws made to 31 by going 6-of-6 from the line in the game.
Minnesota finished the game shooting 59.1 percent for the game and holding Michigan to just 35.7 percent.
The Golden Gophers play two big home this week, hosting Michigan State on Thursday and Purdue on Sunday.
