WTF: Four Gophers Seek NCAA Qualifying Marks at Iowa State

3/5/2005 12:00:00 AM | Women's Track & Field

Members of the Minnesota women's track and field team had one final opportunity to qualify for or improve their qualifying marks to the NCAA Championships, which will be held in Fayetteville, Ark., March 11-12. Among those competing on Saturday at the NCAA Track and Field Qualifying Meet hosted by Iowa State were Golden Gophers Liz Roehrig and Andrea Smith who have already achieved provisional qualifying marks. Fellow teammates Laura Massey and Ashley Nord, also participating in Ames, Iowa, were both seeking qualifying marks in the pole vault.

Roehrig, a freshman who had provisionally qualified for the NCAA's in both the pentathlon and high jump, participated only in the high jump at ISU. Roehrig was tied for the ninth best high jump clearance in the country at 5-10 1/2 heading into the weekend. Although she tied for second at Iowa State, Roehrig did not better her qualifying mark, clearing 5-7 1/4 on Saturday.

Smith cleared 13-1 1/2 in the pole vault last weekend, setting a new school record and qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships. She was joined in the pole vault competition by fellow freshman, Massey and Nord. Smith placed second with a clearance of 12-6, while Massey and Nord both cleared 11-6 1/4 and finished sixth and eighth respectively.

The NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships open at the Randal Tyson Indoor Track facility on the campus of the University of Arkansas on Friday, March 11 at 9:00 a.m.
