Minnesota became the first No. 6 seed to advance to the Big Ten Tournament championship game, as it went 4-2 to get within one game of claiming back-to-back conference tournament championships. The Golden Gophers have now advanced to the Big Ten Tournament title game, a record five straight times. The current run started in 2001 when Minnesota defeated Michigan at Ohio State to win the Big Ten Tournament championship. Since then, the Golden Gophers have played Ohio State in the last four championship games. Minnesota hosted the Big Ten Tournament in 2002, 03 & 04. The Golden Gophers won both the regular-season and tournament titles in 2004, becoming the first team to do so since 1995. In 2005, the Golden Gophers advanced to the championship game against Ohio State at Illinois.

Minnesota set a Big Ten Tournament record by playing six games en route to finishing second in the 2005 Big Ten Tournament.
