WCC: Gold Team Wins Annual Intrasquad Meet

9/3/2005 12:00:00 AM | Women's Cross Country

thLed by senior co-captain Lauren Williams, the Gold team defeated the Maroon team by a score of 25-31 at the annual women's cross country Intrasquad Meet. Williams won the 5- kilometer race with a time of 18:07. Emily Brown was the top finisher for the Maroon team, coming in second overall with a time of 18:11.

“It was a great opener for us, there were some nice surprises,” said head coach Gary Wilson. “I think this is a team that can contend for a Big Ten Championship. There were the usual suspects finishing at the top, with Lauren (Williams), Emily (Brown), and Ladia (Albertson-Junkans), but we also have a nice group of freshmen. Kristin Johansen did a phenomenal job, and Danielle Ashford had a great race, too. The freshmen are only going to learn more and get better and better as the season goes on.”

Lauren Williams continued her streak at the top of the list of Gopher finishers. Williams was also Minnesota’s top runner at every competition last season.

Three newcomers placed among the top ten in the Intrasquad Meet, with freshman Kristin Johansen finishing sixth (19:05), sophomore transfer Julie Schwengler coming in ninth (19: 44), and freshman Danielle Ashford finishing 10th (20:04).

The Gophers will begin the regular season next weekend with the Oz Memorial Run, which will take place at the Les Bolstad Course starting at 11 a.m. on Sept. 10.
