Men's Swimming & Diving Names 2006-07 Captains

University of Minnesota men's swimming and diving coach Dennis Dale announced the team captains for the 2006-07 season today. Senior swimmers Dan Berve (Papillion, Neb.), Igor Cerensek (Zagreb, Croatia) and Zach Wood (Alma, Mich.) and diver Shaun Kennedy (Deerwood, Minn.) were named captains.
Berve is a three-time All-American for the Golden Gophers and is a two-time College Swim Coaches Association Academic All-American. Berve ranks third all-time at Minnesota in the 100 butterfly and eighth in the 100 backstroke. He is a four-time finalist at the Big Ten Championships.
Cerensek is a nine-time All-American and a two-time Academic All-American. He has reached the finals of all nine career individual events at Big Ten Championships and owns the seventh-fastest time in school history in the 50 freestyle, third-fastest in the 100 free and the ninth-best in the 200 free. Cerensek has competed for his native Croatia at many international meets, most notably the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.
Wood, a butterfly and distance freestyle specialist, finaled three times at the 2006 Big Ten Championships. He ranks fifth all-time at Minnesota in the 1650 and 1000 freestyle and eighth in the 200 butterfly. He recently finished eighth in the 200-meter butterfly at the 2006 U.S. Summer Nationals.
Kennedy is a four-time finalist at the Big Ten Championships and is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and a two-time honorable mention Academic All-American. He qualified for the 2006 USA Diving Senior Nationals, competing on the platform and in 3-meter synchronized event.
The 10th-ranked Gophers compete on Friday at No. 3 Florida for a 4 p.m. meet.
