Gopher Men Win Minnesota Invite With 1,072 Points

With 1,702 points the University of Minnesota men’s swimming and diving team won the Minnesota Invitational, today, at the University Aquatic Center. The Gophers had a 436-point lead over second-place Wisconsin, who had 636 points. Florida Atlantic was third with 519 points.
The Gophers won seven events contested today. Mike Holmes won the 1650 free in a time of 15:34.54, while Fabian Toth followed in 15:34.55. Michael Daup touched the wall in 15:48 and placed third overall and Nico Zebley added a fourth-place finish in 15:53.66. Zach Wood rounded out the top five with a time of 15:57.67.
Dan Berve won the 200 backstroke when he chipped in a time of 1:50.99. After FAU’s Jonathan Pinto held the second spot, Minnesota’s Kevin Ewald (1:52.61) and Zebley (1:56.31) took home the third and fourth finish.
Minnesota dominated the 100 freestyle, placing six swimmers in the A Final. Igor Cerensek won the event in 44.57, while Mike Woodson placed third in 45.81. Matt Engel added a fourth-place showing (45.91), followed by Ray Betuzzi in fifth (46.10), Peter Mullee in sixth (46.60) and Jimmer Dorweiler in eighth (46.94).
Jason Timmer earned the top spot in the 200 breastroke when he clocked a time of 2:03.37. Drew Knoechel placed second overall in 2:04.26, while Colin Lee-To added an eighth-place finish in 2:11.33.

Hiro Sugimoto won the event in 1:52.19, followed by Adam Weis in second place (1:53.03) and Evan Bernier in third (1:53.68). Alex Wold touched the wall in 1:55.22 and held the fourth-best time, while John Menozzi placed fifth (1:55.40), Anthony Portela in sixth (1:56.94) and Wood in seventh (2:02.35).
Minnesota placed three 400 free relays in the top three. Timmer, Tyler Schmidt, Woodson and Betuzzi won the event in 3:00.66. Mario Delac, Bernier, Engel and Cerensek placed second (3:01.08), while Lee-To, Mullee, Mark Solfelt and Dorweiler added a third-place finish (3:04.02).
In diving action, Shaun Kennedy won the platform event with a score of 293.65. Cole Young finished sixth overall (204.20) and Tyler Jepsen followed in seventh place (191.30).
Following a week off from competition, Minnesota competed at the Ohio State Invitational, Dec. 1-3.
