Gopher Women Finish Tie for Third in Minnesota Invite

The University of Minnesota women’s swimming and diving team closed out the Minnesota Invitational with a third-place tie and 643 points, finishing today at the University Aquatic Center. Notre Dame won the invite with 889 points, followed by Tennessee with 805 points. The Golden Gophers tied Wisconsin in the final day of competition.
Amy Funk, Sharon Leary, Jennifer Chang, Meredith McCarthy and Danielle Ridder all competed in the 1650 free to start the final day of competition and finished in the top 25. Funk held the Gophers’ best time in the event in 17:35.27 and a 17th-place finish. Leary finished 18th (17:39.38), Chang finished 19th (17:41.34), McCarthy finished 20th (17:44.28) and Ridder placed 23rd overall (17:47.71).
Roxane Akradi won the 200 backstroke in a time of 2:02.27, while Jennifer Hasling finished fourth in a time of 2:03.88. Deidre DeWall also made the A Final and finished seventh overall in a time of 2:06.69.
Yuen Kobayashi led the Gophers in the 100 free event when she placed sixth overall in a time of 51.74. Minnesota had three in the B Final with Krista Kezbers winning the final in a time of 51.79 and placed ninth overall. Valerie Tukey added a 10th-place showing in 52.02, while Stacy Busack placed 11th overall in a time of 52.04.
Jenny Shaughnessy led the Maroon and Gold in the 200 breaststroke when she touched the wall in 2:21.87 and sixth overall. Kobayashi placed fifth overall in the 200 fly with a time of 2:06.26, while Erin O’Neil finished sixth in 2:07.48. The Gophers closed out the Minnesota Invite with a second-place finish in the 400 free relay. Kobayashi, McCarthy, Kezbers and Shaughnessy combined for a time of 3:25.76.
In diving action, Erica Schiffler led the Gophers on the platform event with a score of 225.05. Holly Jakits finished fourth (217.75), while Brianna Hubbard finished fifth (209.85). The Gopher freshmen divers finished the meet strong as well. Hillary Provo placed 10th (180.45), followed by Alexandra Barstad in 11th (176.95) and Jacqueline Schroeder in 14th (167.70).
“Overall I think the team did a great job,” co-head coach Terry Nieszner said. “We had such a tough fall schedule facing top-ranked Cal, No. 2 Florida. To compete against those teams, we had to have all of our swimmers compete in their top events so this weekend it was nice for them to great a little break. It was the only chance our swimmers could try something different and it was nice to evaluate them in different events. It was a great learning experience this weekend.”
Following a week off, the Gophers compete for the final time of the semester at the Georgia Invitational, Dec. 1-3 in Athens, Ga.
