The Big Ten Conference has announced that Yuen Kobayashi (Osaka, Japan) from the women’s swimming and diving team has earned Big Ten Swimmer of the Week honors for her performance last weekend at the Georgia Invite.

Kobayashi earned her first Big Ten weekly honor after setting two automatic qualifying times at the Georgia Invite last weekend. Kobayashi started the Georgia Invite with a season-best and automatic qualifying time of 4:44.61 in the 500 free. She ended the meet with another automatic qualifying time in the 1,650 event. Clocking a time of 16:18.83, Kobayashi won the 1650 free by nearly seven seconds. With her times in the 500 and 1,650 free, Kobayashi will compete in the 2007 NCAA Championships, held at the University Aquatic Center on the U of M campus. Along with 500 free and 1,650 free times, Kobayashi provisionally qualified in the 200 free (1:48.48) as well as in the 400 (3:23.18) and 800 free relays (7:13.73). The Gophers finished third at the Georgia Invite behind No. 8 Georgia and No. 4 California.

The Gophers are idle until after the semester break. Minnesota will train in Hawaii following Christmas and will compete in the Hawaii Rainbow Invitational on Jan. 13.
