Gophers Cruise Past Big Ten Opponents at Iowa

April 1, 2006 - The University of Minnesota rowing team cruised past Big Ten opponents Iowa and Wisconsin as well as nonconference foe Creighton on Lake McBride in Solon, Iowa. The Gophers won five of six events contested, including the First Varsity Eight, the Second Varsity Eight and the First Varsity Four. The conditions were a 10 mile per hour wind and 45 degrees.

Minnesota's 1V8 boat of Megan Flannery, Cheryl Wick at stroke, Berit Tomten, Laura Jatautaite,Vilma Stragyte, Jillian Casey, Jennifer Barnes, Erika Bartkute and Katie Biese clocked a winning time of 7:18.6, while Iowa clocked a time of 7.36.69 and Creighton came in third in a time of 8.02.29.

Minnesota's 2V8 of coxswain Leah Gross, Megan Stuhlfaut, Rachel Hotkowski, Mary Ann Weinzierl, Catherine Casey, Sally Olson, Maggie Armstrong, Heidi Bechtel and Tina Cho also blew past their opponents of Iowa an Creighton as well. Minnesota's time of 7.41.20 won the race, followed by Iowa in second with a time of 8.06.22 and Creighton in third in 8.57.93.

The Gophers continued in their winning ways with a 1V4 win over Wisconsin. The 1V4 Gopher team of coxswain Kaja Tally, Tracey Tallman at stroke, Katie Engel, Christine O'Donnell and Alissa Almquist won by four seconds over the Badgers. The Gophers' finished third in the 2V4 behind two Wisconsin boats for third place overall. The 2V4 contained Stephanie Holzwart, Liz Ponder, Angela Reesman, Lauren VanProosdy and Jennifer Sharpe at bow.

In novice action, the Gophers won two of three races on the day. The First Novice Eight finished second behind Wisconsin. The Gopher boat of Erica Niemiec, Emily Johnson, Emily Baxter, Ashlee Vilmo, Erin Desmond, Stephanie Bakkum, Lisa Pugh, Katie Johnson and Allison Fisher clocked a time of 7.35.70, but was beat out by Wisconsin's time of 7.31.67.

The Second Novice Eight walked away with a time in a time of 8.06.34. The winning boat contained Courtney Elm as the coxswain, Julia Beni at stroke, Jessica Veit, Alexandra Lacey, Susan Closmore, Lindsey Kamp, Erika Wederquist, Anna Boyer and Samantha Thomas at bow.

The Gophers and Hawkeyes also competed in Novice Four competition. Minnesota won the race in a time of 9:34.96 to Iowa's time of 9:41.52. The novice four held coxswain Veronia Kuntz, Katie Rowbottom, Sarah Schuppenhauer, Madeline Murphy and Nichole Wahl.

The Gophers' next action will be on April 8, as they visit UCLA on a nonconference match up. Following their trek to the west coast, the Gophers return to Big Ten competiton as they face Indiana and Ohio State in Bloomington, Ind.
