Gophers Compete Against Big Ten Opponents

The First Varsity Eight started the day with a win over host school Indiana. Minnesota's 1V8 of Megan Flannery, Cheryl Wick at stroke, Berit Tomten, Laura Jatautaite,Vilma Stragyte, Jillian Casey, Jennifer Barnes, Erika Bartkute and Katie Biese clocked a winning time of 6:38.83, while the Hoosiers chipped in a time of 6:47.38. The Gophers would improve of their time in their second heat with a time of 6:38.2, but the No. 5 Ohio State Buckeyes would top the Gophers with a winning time of 6:33.7
The Gophers' Second Varsity Eight came in second in both heats behind Ohio State and in front of Oregon State. Minnesota's 2V8 of coxswain Leah Gross, Megan Stuhlfaut, Rachel Hotkowski, Mary Ann Weinzierl, Catherine Casey, Sally Olson, Maggie Armstrong, Heidi Bechtel and Tina Cho clocked times of 6:44.4 and 6:48.7 in their respective races. OSU won the heats with times of 6:37.29 and 6:42.5
The 1V4 Gopher team of coxswain Kaja Tally, Tracey Tallman at stroke, Katie Engel, Christine O'Donnell and Alissa Almquist were victorious in both of their heats. The 1V4 won their first heat in a race against Indiana with a winning time of 7:35.72, while topping the Buckeyes by a five-second margin of 7:30.03 to 7:35.53.
Gophers' Second Varsity Four finished second in each heat. The 2V4 of Stephanie Holzwart, Liz Ponder, Emily Baxter, Lauren Van Proosdy and Angela Reesman finished second behind OSU with times of 7:41.16 and 7:37.98. OSU had winning times of 7:36.39 and 7:36.8, respectively.
Minnesota's First Novice Eight split its competition with a loss to Indiana, but a win over Ohio State. The 1N8 of coxswain Erica Niemiec Emily Johnson, Erin Desmond, Ashlee Vilmo, Lisa Pugh, Stephanie Bakkum, Allison Fisher, Katherine Johnson and Anna Boyer at bow finished the first heat time of 6:57.4. However, The Gophers battled back in their second heat and defeated OSU by nearly 19 seconds with a time of 7:02.3 to OSU's time of 7:21.7.
Minnesota's Second Novice Eight competed in one heat, winning by a 3.8 mragin over Indiana. The 2N8 consisted of coxswain Sarah Woessner, Julia Beni at stroke, Jessica Veit, Lindsey Kamp, Susan Closmore, Alexandra Lacey, Erika Wederquist, Samantha Thomas and Katie Rowbottom at bow.
Minnesota will compete in one final tune-up before the Big Ten Championships in two weeks. Next weekend the Gophers host Kansas and Boston University, April 22, at Lake Phalen.
