5/25/2006 12:00:00 AM | Rowing

The University of Minnesota rowing team arrived in Princeton, N.J. approximately at 10:15 p.m. on Tuesday night. The Golden Gophers started their Wednesday with a 30-minute run near Lake Carnegie, named after the man who built it, entrepreneur Andrew Carnegie in 1906. The lake is located near the Princeton campus and next to Princeton's boathouse, which holds the Tigers' teams as well as the Princeton National Rowing Association, some of the best rowers in the nation.

Following the run and breakfast, the Gophers toured the Princeton campus before heading off to practice in the afternoon. Mercer Lake, home of the 2006 NCAA Championships, was open for teams to practice at 3 p.m. Minnesota traveled down the course twice, along with the rest of the qualifying field, 28 in all. Minnesota is one of 16 Division I institutions represented, as well as four Division II teams and eight teams from the Division II level.

The Gophers had dinner at Ruby Tuesday on Wed., night and then it was off to bed to rest before their practice at 7 a.m. Thursday morning. The Gophers will have one final chance to practice on the lake before Friday’s competition begins. The course will be open at 4 p.m. today and the Gophers will participate in their final practice of the season before the heats tomorrow at 8:15 a.m. The Gophers drew Heat 2, consisting of No. 1 Princeton, No. 5 Notre Dame, No. 17 Michigan State and No. 10 Wisconsin. Minnesota has faced all but Princeton during the regular and postseason competition. If the Gophers finish in the top three of their respective heat, they automatically advance to the semifinals. If not, they will compete in a second race on Friday in the 4 p.m. repechage.
