The University of Minnesota men’s hockey team is making a habit under Head Coach Don Lucia of raising banners to the Mariucci Arena rafters as the Golden Gophers captured the 2005-06 WCHA Regular Season Championship to hang their sixth banner in the last five seasons. The Maroon and Gold finished the season with a 27-9-5 overall record and a 20-5-3 mark in WCHA play.

After a disappointing fourth-place finish at the 2006 WCHA Final Five, Minnesota earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth consecutive season and made its nation-leading 30th appearance in the NCAA Tournament, including its sixth in a row. The Golden Gophers’ season came to a surprisingly abrupt end, however, as Atlantic Hockey Champion Holy Cross stunned Minnesota with a 4 -3 overtime win at the 2006 NCAA West Regional in Grand Forks, N.D.

The Maroon and Gold finished the 2005-06 season with its fewest losses (9) since the 2002-03 National Champion Golden Gophers went 28-8-9. Minnesota’s senior class of P.J. Atherton, Gino Guyer, Chris Harrington, Peter Kennedy and Andy Sertich finished their careers as one of the most productive classes in the history of Minnesota's Pride on Ice. Together, the five seniors won one NCAA title, two WCHA Final Five crowns, appeared in four NCAA Tournaments and three Frozen Fours, and won nearly 70 percent of their games in the last four years. The Golden Gophers were the nation's top-ranked team for eight weeks of the 2005-06 season.
