Andy Hunter Named Second-Team Academic All-American

Minnesota senior first baseman Andy Hunter (West St. Paul, Minn.) was named a Second-Team Academic All-American.

It marked the third straight year that Hunter has received Academic All-American honors. Hunter also received second-team honors in 2004 and was a Third- Team Academic All-American in 2005. He is also a three-time Academic All-District honoree and has been named Academic All-Big Ten the last four years.

Hunter is ranked ninth in the Big Ten in on-base percentage at .434 as of May 28. He led Minnesota in home runs (5), RBI (41), walks (29), total bases (93) and slugging percentage. Hunter was also second on the team in batting average at .344.

Last week, Hunter was named Third-Team All-Big Ten at first base. It marked the fourth year in a row that Hunter received All-Big Ten honors. The last Golden Gopher to receive All-Big Ten honors in all four years of their career was Sam Steidl (2001-04). Hunter was Second-Team All-Big Ten at designated hitter in 2003, First-Team All-Big Ten at first base in 2004, and was third-team at first base the last two years.

Hunter finished his career as the Minnesota record holder in Big Ten RBI with 109. He was also tied for sixth on the school’s all-time list in games played (229), seventh in at-bats (781), tied for fifth in hits (269), fourth in doubles (60), tied for ninth in home runs (27), fourth in total bases (418) and was second in RBI (198). Along with the RBI record, Hunter played more Big Ten games then any other Golden Gopher player with 117, was seventh in runs scored in conference play (78) and was eighth in walks (51).
