The Golden Gophers will kick off the 2006-07 season by hosting the Alumni Meet on Friday Oct. 6. Minnesota will then open the regular season at home against California-Berkeley on Friday Oct. 13 at 6 p.m. The Maroon and Gold then start the Big Ten season with a dual meet against Iowa on Friday, Oct. 20 at 4 p.m. The Gophers will then compete in two invites, including the Minnesota Invitational Nov. 17-19 at home. In the second half of the season, Minnesota will travel to Madison, Wis., to compete against the Badgers, Purdue and Illinois in the Quad Duals, Jan. 19-20.
For the second time in four years, the University of Minnesota will host the Big Ten Championships, Feb. 8-10. Minnesota hosted the league championships in February of 2004 and finished sixth overall. The Gophers placed second at last year's Big Ten Championships as Kate Hardt, Christine Jennings, Yuen Kobayashi and Jenny Shaughnessy were named first-team All-Big Ten selections. Kobayashi was also named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, while Niezsner and Kremer were named Big Ten Coaches of the Year as the Gophers improved four spots in the conference standings in just one year.
The Gophers will then host the NCAA Championships, March 8-10, also at the University Aquatic Center. The last time Minnesota hosted the event dates back to the 1998 championship also at the University Aquatic Center. Minnesota sent 10 swimmers to the NCAA Championships last season and had nine honorable mention All-Americans.
