Gopher Swimmers Conclude Speedo Series

The University of Minnesota women's swimming and diving team concluded the 2006 USA Swimming Speedo Champions Series today at the University Aquatic Center. In the final two days, Minnesota had 14 swimmers representing the U in nine events.

Katie Wind finished second overall in the 200-meter backstroke with an Open qualifying time of 2:20.80, while Jenny Hasling followed in third with a time of 2: 23.24. Yuen Kobayashi, Erin O'Neil and Jennifer Chang all made the A Final of the 400 free event. Kobayashi won the event and established a meet record and a National qualifying time of 4:19.83. O'Neil finished second in a time of 4:24.32, while Chang clocked a time of 4:31.53 and placed seventh overall. Valerie Tukey finished 10th in a time of 4:26.72.

Erika Bjorklund finished 12th overall in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:15.67. Chang and O'Neil also finished 11th and 13th in the 100 fly event. Jenny Shaughnessy and incoming freshman Deidre DeWall placed 22nd and 23rd in the same event with times of 1:05.77 and 1:06.04. To conclude Saturday's events, Minnesota's 800 free relay won the event. The relay of O'Neil, Chang, Shaughnessy and Stacy Busack combined for an Open qualifying time of 8:32.41.

On Sunday, DeWall and Lindsey St. Martin each competed in the 200 individual medley. DeWall added an eighth-place finish in a time of 2:29.88, while St. Martin finished 2:28.79 and 15th overall. Kobayashi won her second event of the meet, this time in the 1500 free. Kobayashi set yet another meet record in a National qualifying time of 16:57.61, which beat Carly Piper's 2003 record of 17:01.70. It was the third meet record that a member of the Minnesota swim team had broke at the four-day event. Minnesota previously broke the 400 free relay on Friday. Tukey placed eighth in the same event (17:52.63), while Amy Killpatrick placed 16th overall (18:09.93).

Busack led the Gopher contingent in the 50 free event when she placed fourth overall in an Open qualifying time of 26.85. Hasling also made the A Final and placed seventh in a time of 27.12. Incoming freshman Kayla Redig also competed in the event in a time of 28.34. The meet ended with a third-place finish in the 400 medley relay. Hasling, Bjorklund, Chang and O'Neil had a time of 4:24.47. The Gophers' B relay of Busack, Shaughnessy, St. Martin and Sharon Leary added a Junior National qualifying time of 4:30.93 and placed ninth overall.

A select group of Minnesota swimmers will compete in the final event of the summer at the US National Championships in Irvine, Calif., August 1-5.
