University of Minnesota swimmer David Plummer (Oklahoma City, Okla.) competed in the 100-meter backstroke yesterday at the Mutual of Omaha Pan Pacific Championships in Victoria, B.C. The junior finished with the seventh-best time in the preliminaries but did not advance to the finals due to the fact he was the fourth-fastest American and only three can advance to the finals. Plummer, the only Big Ten Conference athlete on the Team USA roster for the Championships, will swim the 200 backstroke on Saturday.
Plummer clocked a time of 55.04 in the prelims, ranking him seventh overall. Three Americans (Aaron Peirsol, Ryan Lochte and Randall Bal) finished ahead of Plummer and advanced to the finals despite Plummer posting a time that would have qualified him for the finals. He finished third in his prelim heat behind Lochte and Bal. Peirsol went on to win the event in the evening.
Incoming freshman Ray Betuzzi (Calgary, Alberta) competed in the 200-meter freestyle for Canada and placed 30th with a time of 1:53.05. He will swim the 400-meter free on Saturday.
