University of Minnesota junior defenseman Alex Goligoski (Grand Rapids, Minn.) has been named the WCHA Defensive Player of the Week, following Minnesota’s two-win showing at the Dodge Holiday Classic last weekend at Mariucci Arena. Goligoski recorded a four-point weekend with 1-3--4 to help the top-ranked Golden Gophers to their ninth straight and 11th all-time Classic title.

In Friday’s 3-1 win over Alabama-Huntsville, Goligoski assisted on Ben Gordon’s game-opening power-play goal. In the 5-2 win over Ferris State on Saturday, he recorded his fourth three-point game of the season with one goal and two assists. Goligoski assisted on Jay Barriball’s game-winning power-play goal at 13:14 of the first period and Blake Wheeler’s marker at 16:15 of the third period. In between, he scored his seventh goal of the season with a power-play tally at 12:59 of the second period.

With his four-point performance, Goligoski was named the Dodge Holiday Classic MVP. He is now on a four-game point streak (1-6--7) and has a point in 14 of 21 games this season. Goligoski leads the team and ranks tied for first in the WCHA in scoring with totals of 7-19--26 through 21 games.
