Alex Goligoski Named WCHA Defensive Player of the Week

University of Minnesota junior defenseman Alex Goligoski (Grand Rapids, Minn.) has been named the WCHA Defensive Player of the Week, following Minnesota’s two-win showing at the Dodge Holiday Classic last weekend at Mariucci Arena. Goligoski recorded a four-point weekend with 1-3--4 to help the top-ranked Golden Gophers to their ninth straight and 11th all-time Classic title.
In Friday’s 3-1 win over Alabama-Huntsville, Goligoski assisted on Ben Gordon’s game-opening power-play goal. In the 5-2 win over Ferris State on Saturday, he recorded his fourth three-point game of the season with one goal and two assists. Goligoski assisted on Jay Barriball’s game-winning power-play goal at 13:14 of the first period and Blake Wheeler’s marker at 16:15 of the third period. In between, he scored his seventh goal of the season with a power-play tally at 12:59 of the second period.
With his four-point performance, Goligoski was named the Dodge Holiday Classic MVP. He is now on a four-game point streak (1-6--7) and has a point in 14 of 21 games this season. Goligoski leads the team and ranks tied for first in the WCHA in scoring with totals of 7-19--26 through 21 games.
The award is the second Defensive Player of the Week honor for Goligoski this season.
