Minnesota junior diver Cole Young (Overland Park, Kan.) continued a very strong performance at the Minnesota Diving Invitational this afternoon, winning the 3-meter title a day after claiming the 1-meter crown.
Young won the 3-meter event in a very closely contested final with teammate Drew Brown. Young notched a winning tally of 376.60, less than two points over Brown's score of 374.95. Brown's score is a personal-best and ranks him fourth all-time at Minnesota in the event while Young already ranks second all-time. Brown held the lead following the prelims with a score of 364.25 to Young's 338.30.
Junior Tyler Jepsen had a career day as well, notching a personal-best score of 292.80 in the finals to finish third overall. He narrowly missed the NCAA Zone qualifying mark of 300 points.
"We are making excellent progress," head diving coach Jason Baumann said. "Cole is having a breakout season leading the way. His work over the summer and qualifying for Senior Nationals on platform this summer has a lot to do with his success this year. I think he realized that he is an elite level diver. He has brought his discipline approach of study and evaluation to the sport and he continues to look for ways to improve. It is no coincidence that Cole's success is also correlated to Drew’s arrival. They push each other in practice and in meets. Drew has been going through the typical progress for a freshman coming in, but I am expecting great things from him, he has so much ability and he is learning at a great rate. I am also really happy for Tyler he just keeps improving, and he put up a personal best again today. I am really looking forward to our first platform event of the season tomorrow.”
The competition continues with the platform competition tomorrow at noon.
