University of Minnesota junior diver Cole Young (Overland Park, Kan.) was named the Big Ten Diver of the Week today by the conference office. Young won the 1-and 3-meter diving events this weekend at the Minnesota Diving Invitational. He becomes the first Gopher diver since 2003 to earn the weekly laurel.
Young's top performance of the weekend came on the 1-meter springboard where he racked up a six-dive finals score of 361.65 to claim the victory. His score ranked as the second-best in school history behind just six-time All-American Dan Croaston. His score was also one of three NCAA Zone qualifying performances that he posted during the three-day meet.
On Saturday, Young tallied a winning score of 376.60 to win the 3-meter title. His score was just off his personal-best tally set earlier this season against Florida. He placed second in the 10-meter platform competition on Sunday afternoon as well with a score of 311.775.
Young is the first Gopher diver since Ben Herdt on November 5, 2003 to be named the conference diver of the week. Young is a four-time point scorer at the Big Ten Championships and was a qualifier for U.S. Nationals this past summer where he competed on the platform and in the 3-meter synchronized event.
The Gopher divers will head to Bloomington, Ind. this weekend for the Indiana Invitational. They will join the rest of the 10th-ranked Gopher swimming and diving team for the Ohio State Invitational, November 30-December 2 in Columbus, Ohio.
