Minnesota Baseball Announces 2008 Schedule

The Minnesota baseball team has finalized its 2008 schedule according to an announcement by head coach John Anderson. The Golden Gophers will face five teams that played in last year’s NCAA Tournament.
Minnesota will also play 31 of its 56 games at home this year. The Golden Gophers will play 17 games at the Metrodome and 14 at Siebert Field this season.
The Golden Gophers will start the regular season in Oxford, Miss. when it faces 2007 NCAA Super Regional participant Ole Miss. They will face the Rebels on Friday, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. (CT), Saturday, Feb. 23 at 12:30 p.m. (CT) and Sunday, Feb. 24 at 12 p.m. (CT).
Minnesota will return home after that to host the 24th annual Dairy Queen Classic on Feb. 29 through Mar. 2. The Dairy Queen Classic field will include 2007 NCAA Regional participant Pepperdine, Tulane and TCU. The Golden Gophers will face TCU on Friday, Feb. 29 at 6:35 p.m., Tulane on Saturday, Mar. 1 at 6:35 p.m. and Pepperdine on Sunday, Mar. 2 at 3:05 p.m.
On Mar. 7-9, Minnesota will host the Metrodome Tournament with a field that includes California, New Mexico and Northern Iowa. The Golden Gophers will face New Mexico on Friday, Mar. 7 at 6:35 p.m., California on Saturday, Mar. 8 at 6:35 p.m. and Northern Iowa on Sunday, Mar. 9 at 3:05 p.m.
Minnesota will head to California to face Pacific in a three-game series on Mar. 14-16. The Golden Gophers will face the Tigers on Friday, Mar. 14 at 8 p.m. (CT), Saturday, Mar. 15 at 4 p.m. (CT) and Sunday, Mar. 16 at 3 p.m. (CT).
After the three-game series at Pacific, Minnesota will then return home to host North Dakota State on Tuesday, Mar. 18 at 6:35 p.m. and Wednesday, Mar. 19 at 3:05 p.m. The Golden Gophers will host South Dakota State on Friday, Mar. 21 at 6:35 p.m., Saturday, Mar. 22 at 2:05 p.m. and Sunday, Mar. 23 at 1:05 p.m.
Minnesota will face 2007 NCAA Regional participant Missouri on Tuesday, Mar. 25 at 6:35 p.m. and Wednesday, Mar. 26 at 1:35 p.m., before getting underway with Big Ten play.
In the remaining 2008 non-conference games, the Golden Gophers will also face Northern Iowa at Siebert Field on Wednesday, Apr. 9 at 3:05 p.m. and the Panthers on Wednesday, Apr. 16 at 3 p.m. Minnesota will face South Dakota State in Sioux Falls, S.D. on Wednesday, Apr. 23 at 6:30 p.m. and will host the Jackrabbits at Siebert Field on Wednesday, Apr. 30 at 6:35 p.m. The Golden Gophers will wrap up their non-conference scheduled with a midweek game at Fargo against North Dakota State on Wednesday, May 7 at 6:30 p.m.
Minnesota opens up Big Ten play in the Metrodome against Indiana on Mar. 28-30. The Golden Gophers first Big Ten road series will be at 2007 NCAA Regional participant Ohio State on Apr. 4-6. Minnesota will also have Big Ten road series at Northwestern (Apr. 11-13), at Purdue (Apr. 25-27) and at Iowa (May 2-4).
The Golden Gophers will play their final three Big Ten series at Siebert Field. Minnesota will host Illinois on Apr. 18-20, and will wrap up the season with home conference series against 2007 NCAA Super Regional participant Michigan on May 9-11 and against Penn State May 15-17.
Minnesota returns 13 letterwinners from a team that finished 41-18, advanced to the NCAA Regionals and finished tied for second in the Big Ten at 18-9. The Golden Gophers also advanced to the Big Ten Tournament Championship for a conference record seventh straight time. Minnesota also returns a pair of First-Team All-Big Ten honorees in junior third baseman Nate Hanson (Chanhassen, Minn.) and junior outfield Matt Nohelty (Rothschild, Wis.), along with Third-Team All-Big Ten junior lefthander Kyle Carr (Linton, N.D.).
