The Golden Gophers bested the Lady Catamounts 70-67 Friday night at Williams Arena in the opening game of the Subway Classic. The hard-fought contest featured 17 lead changes and 8 ties. The Gophers were led by junior guard Emily Fox’s game-high 18 points and sophomore Katie Ohm, who pulled down a career-high 10 boards and finished just one point shy of her first career double-double.
The Lady Catamounts were led by senior Ashley Pellom and junior Lauren Powell, who combined for 32 points.
With :08.6 remaining, sophomore point guard Brittany McCoy hit the front end of a one-and-one to push the lead to three, but missed the second. Following a Western Carolina rebound, the Lady Catamounts used their final timeout with :03.1 left. Western Carolina’s Monique Dawson missed a 3-point attempt at the buzzer that would have tied the score.
The first half was a back and forth, physical affair which featured a combined 21 turnovers and 19 fouls. During one stretch near the end of the half, the Gophers and the Lady Catamounts traded turnovers on six consecutive possessions. The Gophers were plagued by a field goal drought that lasted 4:56 from the latter stages of the first half until an Ashley Ellis-Milan layup with 19:07 remaining in the contest.
Fox’s 12 first half points were the high point of the half for the Gophers. The spree included four straight field goals during an 8-2 run midway through the first half that led the Gophers to a 33-30 halftime advantage.
The Lady Catamounts came out strong in the second half, starting the second stanza on a 14-5 run. The run included two 3-point field goals from forward Brooke Johnson that pushed their lead to a game-high six points with 15:10 remaining in the contest.
The Gophers would respond with a 10-2 run of their own that included 3-point field goals from Ohm sandwiched around a Fox jumper. However, following another lead change, Western Carolina still led 56-53 with 8:06 remaining.
With Western Carolina clinging to slim leads throughout the majority of the second half, the Gophers took the lead for good at 59-58 following layups on consecutive possessions by Zoe Harper. The consecutive Harper buckets, along with a pair of McCoy field goals, a Fox layup and two Ellis-Milan free throws were a part of a pivitol 12-2 run that secured the Gopher victory.
