Almstrom Ties for 16th at All-American Golf Classic

Minnesota junior Victor Almstrom carded a three-round total of even-par 213 to finish in a three-way tie for 16th at the prestigious Western Refining College All-American Golf Classic at the par-71 El Paso Country Club Tuesday.
Competing in a elite field of 28 All-Americans from the 2006 season, Almstrom shot a 2-under par 69 during the first round and a 1-over 72 during the second round to finish Monday’s opening 36 holes in 16th place at 1-under par 141.
He completed the tournament with a solid final-round score of 1-over 72, but was unable to gain any ground on the leader board.
Wake Forest’s Webb Simpson took medalist honors with a final score of 15-under 198. The only other Big Ten participant, Wisconsin’s Dan Woltman, tied for 21st at 2-over 215.
Almstrom qualified for the event based upon his 2006 PING honorable mention All-American citation from the Golf Coaches Association of American. He received All-American honors after carding a 1-under-par score of 279 and finishing in 15th place the 2006 NCAA Men’s Golf Championships in June.
Through five stroke-play tournaments so far this season, Almstrom ranks second on the team with a 72.67 stroke average. He shot par or better in 8 of 15 team stoke-play rounds during the fall and collected three top-10 finishes, including a tie for second at the PING/Golfweek Preview.
The Western Refining College All-American Golf Classic is hosted annually by the Sun Bowl Association, which awards a $1,000 scholarship to each university that has a competitor qualify for and compete in the tournament.
