Gopher Rowing Closes Out Fall Season in Chicago

The University of Minnesota rowing team finished the 2007 fall season on a high note, competing at the Cal-Sag Collegiate Regatta in Chicago, Ill. The Gophers had four varsity boats compete in the regatta with three finishing in the top 11 overall.

The Gophers started the day competing in a 5K race, with the top teams advancing to the A-E finals (A Finals being the fastest boats). Minnesota had one boat in the A Final and the Gophers’ Second and Third Varsity Eights compete in the C Final. Minnesota was the only team to have three boats in the top three finals.

The Gophers’ First Varsity Eight finished second in the 5K in a time of 15:53.000 to advance to the A Final. Minnesota’s boat of coxswain Megan Flannery, Laura Jatautaite at stroke, Rebekah Brzozowski, Jenny Barnes. Ashlee Vilmo, Stephanie Bakkum, Mary Ann Weinzierl, Sarah Graham and Tina Cho at bow finished fourth in the A Final with a time of 6:58.498. Finishing in front of the Gophers were Wisconsin (6:45.499), Michigan State (6:45.767) and Michigan (6:55.451).

The Gophers’ Third Varsity Eight won the C Final. Coxswain Monika Folker led the boat of Jessica Veit, Ali Fisher, Erin Desmond, Michelle Murphy, Kathryn Switalski, Sarah Krueger, Emily Johnson and Megan Lenarz won the final in a time of 6:51.190. They defeated Michigan State’s Second Varsity Eight by nearly three seconds in 6:54.915. Minnesota’s Second Varsity Eight of Erica Niemiec, Katie Johnson, Emily Baxter, Christine O’Donnell, Katie Simpson, Lucy Mulvey, Jenna Schuder, Lauren VanProosdy and Lisa Pugh.

Minnesota’s Fourth Varsity Eight finished 20th overall with a time of 17:16.100. In the Gopher boat was coxswain Linnea Trandem, Michele Peterson at stroke, Jessica Norman, Brenna Galvin, Abby Tomasek, Jessica Mayers, Tracy Merth, Katelyn Nichols and Christine Cira.

“It was wonderful to see the improvement that we’ve made since our last race,” Davis said. “The Head of the Charles didn’t go exactly like we had planned, but we worked on our technique for us to improve. It was great to see us progress so much from the previous race. Also, with the two of our boats in the C Final, it shows how deep we are as a team. We were really pleased to see how we raced today and we are moving in the right direction.”

In novice action, Minnesota had three boats compete in today’s regatta. The Gophers’ top boat finished seventh overall in a time of 17:57.400. Competing in the boat was coxswain Dana Landseidel, Kate Ladell, Shannon Gates, Kristin Haag, Liz Gruse, Alex Gregory, Alyssa Kast, Carrie Gahr and Dani Prestegard at bow. The Gophers’ Second Novice Eight of coxswain Rebecca Emmons, Ann Haberman, Michaela Murphy, Barb Klun, Vanessa Hamer, Melinda Brown, Sara Swenson, Allison Hursh and Sarah Paschke finished in a time of 18:33.300 for 11th place. The Gophers’ Third Novice Eight of coxswain Stadum, Lauren Rynders, Sam Preston, Katherine Foster, Kristi Sroka, Jennie Ehrlich, Carly Schulz, Josie Warren and CJ placed 16th overall in a time of 19:39.400.
