Minnesota junior diver Cole Young (Overland Park, Kan.) posted the second-best score in school history to win the 1-meter diving competition this afternoon at the Minnesota Diving Invitational at University Aquatic Center. The competition was strong for the entire Gopher squad with all three divers reaching career-best scores.

Young racked up a 6-dive finals score of 361.65 to top teammate Drew Brown, who finished second with a tally of 330.975 points. Young's finals score ranks second behind Gopher six-time All-American Dan Croaston and ahead of multiple NCAA champion P.J. Bogart. Young built on a prelims score of 323.85. Young's score was easily an NCAA Zone qualifier and puts him as one of the top scoring divers in the Big Ten this season.

Brown improved from a prelims score of 290.40 to close with a career-best finals score of 330.975. The score also ranks as the eighth-best in school history. Junior Tyler Jepsen topped his personal-best score by almost 30 points in finishing third with a tally of 275.175.

"Our divers are doing a great job, they have been working really hard and that is starting to pay off," diving coach Jason Baumann said. "Cole is having a great season so far, setting personal records and diving great along the way. Cole and Drew provide an excellent 1-2, and they feed off one another. I am excited to see how far they can go in the next year and half together.”

The competition continues with the 3-meter competition tomorrow at noon.
