Maroon Team Wins Men's Gymnastics Intrasquad Meet

"This was a good way to start off our season. An intrasquad meet always gives us the chance to see where we have holes in our routines, and figure out what problems we need to fix," explained head coach Mike Burns. "Overall, I was pleased with the team's performance today. Now we need to get back in the gym to work on our routines and smooth out some of our rough edges."
For the Intrasquad Meet, the team scores consisted of the top three individual gymnasts’ scores from each team, instead of the usual four scores.
The Maroon team started the meet on floor, and was led by Sergei Dmitriev who scored a 14.2 to place third overall. The Maroon Team tallied a 40.7 on the floor. The Gold Team was led by event winner Aaron Fortunato and Eddie Campbell, who each earned a 14.5 to tie for first place. The Gold Team score on floor was 42.9.
The Gold Team was up first on pommel horse, and earned a team score of 38.2. All-American Kit Beikmann was the Gold leader on the event, placing third overall with a 13.2. The Maroon Team was led by Colin McGuire, who won on horse with a 13.4. Michael Hillin was second for the Maroon team and second overall with a mark of 13.3. The Maroon Team tallied a score of 39.8 on horse.
The Maroon Team edged the Gold Team on still rings, winning the event 41.5 to 41.3. For the Maroon, Thomas O’Brien was the leader and overall winner with a 14.1. Mitchell Mays earned a 13.9 to tie for third place. From the Gold squad, Steve Vuong was the highest scorer with a 14.0 to finish second overall. Eddie Campbell earned a 13.9 to tie for third place.
Mitchell Mays was the vault winner, earning a 15.8 for the Maroon Team. Sergei Dmitriev and Colin McGuire tied for third place overall, each earning a 14.8 for the Maroon. As a team, the Maroon earned a 45.4. The Gold Team tallied a 44.3 on vault, led by Andre Berry, who placed second overall with a 15.2.
The Maroon Team had the top three scorers on parallel bars, with Sergei Dmitriev winning the event with his mark of 14.4. Mitchell Mays came in second with a 14.0, while Michael Hillin was third with a 13.7. As a team, the Maroon squad scored 42.1. The Gold Team was led by Aaron Fortunato and Eddie Campbell, who each scored a 13.4. The Gold Team tallied a 39.4 on parallel bars.
The Maroon Team also had the higher score on the high bar, winning the event 41.4-40.3. Michael Hillin led the Maroon with a 13.9 to finish second overall. Cole Storer was third overall and second for the Maroon with a 13.8 Aaron Fortunato of the Gold squad was the event winner, scoring a 14.3.
In the all around competition, Sergei Dmitriev was the winner with an 83.7. Michael Hillin was second with an 81.8, Andre Berry was third with an 80.3, and Aaron Fortunato was fourth with a 79.8.
The Golden Gophers open the season at the Windy City Invitational in Chicago, Ill., and begin the home season by hosting Calgary on Jan. 26 at 1 p.m. in the Sports Pavilion.
