Carmelina Carabajal Earns All-Big Ten Honors

Sophomore gymnast Carmelina Carabajal was named to the All-Big Ten second team, announced tonight at the 2007 Big Ten Championship awards banquet. Carabajal is an all around competitor, and leads the team in average scoring on vault, floor, and in the all around. She owns the team’s highest scores this season on floor (9.900) and in the all around (39.175). Carabajal was named the Big Ten Gymnast of the Week for the week of March 12.

The conference office also announced honorees from each team for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, the student-athletes must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. Minnesota’s Sportsmanship Award winner is junior captain Amanda Miles.

Minnesota will defend its 2006 Big Ten Championship title tomorrow evening at the 2007 Big Ten Women’s Gymnastics Championships. The meet will begin at 5 p.m. central time at Rec Hall on the Penn State University campus. Live scoring for the meet will be available on the Penn State website at www.gopsusports.com.
