Gopher Women's Basketball Celebrates Academic Success
4/3/2007 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
Success in the classroom, like on the court, is an important aspect of the Minnesota women’s basketball program. Following the 2006-07 season, five Golden Gophers – Jordan Barnes, Emily Fox, Leslie Knight, Katie Ohm and Kelly Roysland - were rewarded for their efforts by earning Academic All-Big Ten honors.
Minnesota continues to pace the Big Ten Conference when it comes to academic performance in the sport of women’s basketball. In the five seasons with head coach Pam Borton at the helm, the Gophers have celebrated more Academic All-Big Ten honorees (32) than any other team in the Conference. The Gophers, impressively, have a full 33 percent more academic honorees than their nearest Big Ten competitors. Iowa and Wisconsin top the rest of the field having earned 24 Academic All-Big Ten awards over the same period.
“We stress both the athlete and student portions of being a student-athlete in our program,” said Borton, whose teams have bettered a 3.0 in every semester since she took over at Minnesota. “I’m extremely proud of the academic accomplishments our players have achieved. Being a Division I student-athlete is very demanding. Our overall academic success speaks volumes about the character of the young women that we have wearing the Minnesota uniform.”
The Golden Gophers as a team combined for an impressive 3.04 grade point average in the first semester of the 2006-07 academic year. Leading the way was junior communications major Leslie Knight, who earned a perfect 4.0. Knight was honored as an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team selection
