Freshman Breanna Salley has decided to leave the University of Minnesota, Golden Gopher head coach Pam Borton released today. A St. Francis, Minn., native, Salley left school to pursue a personal development opportunity to participate in Generational Leadership, an 11-month Christian leadership program focusing on leadership and community service for young adults.
Salley and her family provided this statement: “I have decided to leave the University of Minnesota. This was not a basketball-related decision for me. I loved my time as a Golden Gopher, the fans, my teammates and coaches. I’m thankful for those moments and will remember them forever. Still, this is very important to me and I need to pursue this opportunity at this time. I wish Coach Borton and my teammates farewell and good luck.”
“We are obviously saddened by Breanna’s decision to leave school and this team,” said Borton. “Sal had to make a tough decision about what was in her own best interest and we respect that. We will miss her spunk and her bright smile; she was a valued member of our basketball family. We wish her only the best.”
Salley played 16 games in her 2006-07 rookie season with the Golden Gophers. She missed the first two months of the season with a stress fracture in her foot, then returned to average 1.9 points and 8.6 minutes per game.
