Matt Nohelty Named Third-Team Academic All-American
Minnesota sophomore outfielder Matt Nohelty (Rothschild, Wis.) was named a Third-Team Academic All-American according to an announcement on Tuesday, May 29. It marks the fourth straight year a Golden Gopher has received Academic All-American honors.
Nohelty was named First-Team All-Big Ten last week, becoming the first Golden Gopher sophomore to claim first-team honors as a sophomore since Glen Perkins and Andy Hunter did so in 2004. He also joined Mike Mee and Ohio State’s Corry Luebke as the only first-team honorees to also claim Big Ten All-Tournament honors last week.
Entering the week, Nohelty is fifth in the Big Ten in stolen bases with 23. He is currently second on the team in batting average at .379, third in runs at 47, second in hits (74), second in on-base percentage (.448) and first in stolen bases (23).
Since starting to play as a redshirt freshman in 2006, Nohelty has batted .371 with 81 runs and 41 stolen bases. The Golden Gophers are 57-25 with Nohelty batting out of the leadoff spot over the last two seasons. His 41 stolen bases are also the most in the first two years of a career by a Golden Gopher since Wes Denning had 49 in his firsts two seasons in 1994 and 1995.
This year, Nohelty has received Academic All-District honors, top five honors for being one of the top five academic student-athletes at Minnesota and he also received the Presidential Award for leadership and academics. Last year, Nohelty was also named Academic All-Big Ten and was a Minnesota Scholar Athlete.
Nohelty extended Minnesota’s string of claiming the honor to four years in a row. The past three years Andy Hunter has received Academic All-American honors. Hunter received first-team honors in 2004, third-team honors in 2005 and second-team honors in 2006. He was also a three-time Academic All-District honoree.
