Minnesota advanced to its seventh NCAA Regional in the last 10 years. The Golden Gophers went 1-2 in the San Diego Regional, dropping a 7-1 loss to eventual College World Series participant Cal State Fullerton, winning 6-5 in 10 innings over No. 4 San Diego and falling 11-6 to Fresno State. In the opening game of the NCAA Regionals, Minnesota lost to Cal State Fullerton 7-1 on June 1. It was the second time in a row the Golden Gophers had faced the Titans in their first NCAA Regional game, and the second time they lost 7-1. Minnesota bounced back to defeated No. 4 San Diego 6-5 in 10 innings on June 2. For a second straight NCAA Regional (Arizona State in 2004), the Golden Gophers battled the No. 1 seed’s ace after San Diego held back Brian Matusz against No. 4 Fresno State and suffered a loss. The Golden Gophers scored five runs off Matusz, including a pair of home runs that were crushed by Mike Mee and Sean Kommerstad. Minnesota entered the top of the ninth leading 5-0. However, the Toreros battled back to tie the game at 5-5 with one out in the inning. Senior Josh Oslin retired the next two batters to get out of the inning. Oslin also pitched a scoreless 10th. Freshman Derek McCallum delivered an RBI single with the bases loaded in the 10th inning to give Minnesota its first NCAA Regional victory since 2003 at 6-5. Oslin got the win to become the first Golden Gopher pitcher to claim a win in NCAA Tournament play since Brian Bull in 2003 against Pepperdine. Golden Gopher starter Dustin Brabender pitched a career-high eight innings, gave up seven hits, two runs and struck out five to get a no-decision. Minnesota was knocked out by Fresno State 11-6 on June 3. The Golden Gophers hopes were severely damaged when the Bulldogs scored six runs in the top of the first inning. Minnesota cut the lead to 11-6 in the bottom of the seventh and had a chance to make it closer. The Golden Gophers also had several chances to make it closer in the fourth when it was 10-4, but could not capitalize.

Minnesota has now made 28 appearances in the NCAA Tournament and has an overall record of 50-54. The Golden Gophers have gone 17-7 in five appearances in the College World Series for a winning percentage of .708. That winning percentage is second among NCAA Division I programs that have played a minimum of 20 games in the College World Series.

Minnesota’s selection to the San Diego NCAA Regional, was the third time in a row the Golden Gophers had been sent to California for NCAA Regional play. Minnesota’s previous two appearances in the NCAA Tournament had been at Long Beach State in 2003 and Cal State Fullerton in 2004. Overall, the Golden Gophers have appeared in the NCAA Regionals in California seven different times under John Anderson. Minnesota also made regional trips to Stanford in 1987, Fresno State in 1988, Los Angeles in 1991 and Stanford in 1998.
