Seniors Steve Vuong and Sergei Dmitriev have been named captains of the Minnesota men’s gymnastics team for the 2007-08 season, head coach Mike Burns announced today.
“The selection of team captains is always an exciting moment for me,” said Burns. "These two captains will be responsible for leading this team into its 105th season of collegiate gymnastics here at the University of Minnesota. That's a lot of gymnastics leading up to this point in time and Steve and Sergei are the next two in a long line of team captains who will be looked to for leadership by their teammates. I congratulate both of these young men as they accept the responsibility of leadership.”
Vuong, a product of Bountiful, Utah, and the Gophers’ most improved strength award winner last season, competed in all nine regular-season meets during 2006-07, plus both the Big Ten and NCAA Championships.
A fixture on pommel horse, rings, parallel bars and high bar for the Gophers last year, Vuong helped lead Minnesota to a third place finish at the Big Ten Championships and a sixth at the national championships.
Dmitriev, who hails from Minsk, Belarus, and Reno, Nevada, specialized on pommel horse, parallel bars and high bar as a junior and was named the Gophers’ most inspirational gymnast last season.
The Minnesota men’s gymnastics team will open its 2007-08 campaign with an intrasquad exhibition at the Sports Pavilion on Sunday, Dec. 2. The first official competition of the season will take place on Saturday, Jan. 12, when the Gophers travel to Chicago for the Windy City Invitational.
