Minnesota played with fire one too many times and it finally came back to burn them in a draining 80-77 double-overtime loss at Indiana on Thursday. The Golden Gophers left too many points at the free line and despite a valiant effort with their leader Emily Fox fouled out on the bench, came up short. Minnesota fall to 13-6 overall and 4-3 in Big Ten play.
The Gophers made just 18-of-30 free throw attempts, including a crushing 4-of-9 performance in the first overtime. Minnesota finished with five players in double figures led by Leslie Knight with 17 points. Brittany McCoy added 14 points, while Ashley Ellis-Milan and Korinne Campbell tabbed 13 and Katie Ohm with 12. Fox finished with eight points, her first non-double digit outing of the season.
“It’s college basketball; you just have to brush yourself off and move ahead,” said Golden Gopher head coach Pam Borton.
The team entered the second overtime tied 68-68. The Gophers, who ironically made all six of their free throw attempts in this extra stanza, scored first on the two free throws by Ellis-Milan.
The Hoosiers (11-7, 4-2) answered with perhaps the play of the game. With the shot clock running down senior Nikki Smith was fouled by Fox on a three-point field goal attempt from the right wing. Smith, who led five Indiana players in double figures with 21, calmly sank all three from the line to give the Hoosiers a 71-70 lead with 2:10 remaining.
After a Gopher turnover on their next possession, Smith scored a huge three-pointer to extend the lead to four at 74-70 with 1:35 to play. Four free throw by McCoy knotted the score at 74-74 one last time with 1:06 on the clock.
Hoosier center Amber Jackson scored two free throws to put the Hoosiers up for good. The Gophers lost a chance to tie on a turnover and then Smith added to her team-high total for the Hoosiers with two more free throws with 23 seconds left.
Knight hit a three-pointer with 14 seconds left to bring the Gophers back to within a point at 78-77. The Gophers quickly fouled Hoosier Haylie Linn, who missed both free throws but Whitney Thomas sealed the win with a big offensive rebound to keep the ball in Indiana’s hands. Jamie Braun added two free throws for the winning margin. McCoy’s last second attempt was wide and would have been only a two pointer.
Minnesota was unable to take advantage of opportunities in the first overtime period as the Gophers hit just 4-of-9 free throws. The Gophers still had the chance to capture the win. Fox’s 12-foot jumper from the lane fell short.
The game was tied at 60 at the end of regulations. Minnesota fought back from as big as a 12-point deficit behind 12 second-half points by Knight. Ohm sparked the Gophers with three consecutive three-pointers late in the first half to bring the Gophers back to within 35-30 at halftime.
Minnesota has a bye on Sunday. The Gophers next action is Thursday, Jan. 24, when they play host to Ohio State.
