174 Larson vs. Retallic
1:39 Pinfall, Larson
Giving a quick start for Minnesota, sophomore Jeremy Larson found himself tangled up with SDSU’s Justin Retallic for only 1:39 before defeating the Jackrabbit on a pin giving Minnesota the quick 6-0 lead.
184 Sitch vs. Sorenson
D 8-6, Sorenson
Sitch scored first on a quick double leg. After an escape from Sorenson, Sitch grounded his opponent, leaving the Gopher ahead 4-1. However, it was a late reversal by Sorenson that ended the first period at a score of 4-3, advantage Minnesota. Midway through the second period, Sitch scored an escape to widen his lead only to have the score tied at five a piece on a Sorenson take down with 39 seconds left in the period. Sorenson’s stand up at the start of the third gave him a one point advantage and finished Sitch off by gaining the advantage in a tangle on the mat, giving him the win, 8-6, and bringing the overall score 6-3, Minnesota.
197 Bronson vs. Swier
TF Bronson, 17-0
Bronson scored first with a takedown and then proceeded to rack up point after point on nearfall by keeping Swier locked up and scoring 15 straight back points to tech fall Swier 17-0 at 2:51.
Hwt. Malamura vs. Forfeit
Malamura wins on forfeit giving Minnesota 17-3 lead in the dual.
125 Jackson vs. Marvin
D Marvin, 8-4
Larson was first to score on a takedown, but the speedy Marvin countered with an escape almost immediately. Jackson used his speed to get a quick turn on Marvin to gain a 4-1 advantage but Marvin overpowered Jackson, breaking free of his grip and gaining another escape point. After a near takedown at the end of the period would have tied the score, Jackson was able to get out unharmed with a 4-2 lead. It was Marvin who gained the lead 30 seconds into the second period with a single leg that Jackson just could not break free from, tying the match at 4-4. After being issued his second caution, Jackson gave up a technical point to Marvin the give the Jackrabbit the one point advantage. The third period belonged to Marvin as Jackson gave a valiant but fruitless attempt to score the quick takedown. Marvin was able to underhook the Gopher on a shot and turned him for a takedown and extending his lead to 7-4. After ride time, it was Marvin with the victory 8-4.
133 Ness vs. Kulseth
D Ness, 14-5
After battling vertically for half of the first period, Ness was able to take Kulseth down to give him a 2-0 advantage. Despite holding Kulseth in a half nelson for the majority of the period, Ness was unable to run the hold and failed to gain any additional points. On a speedy switch by Ness the score went to 4-0. After hooking the Jackrabbit and gaining three back points on the near fall, Ness took advantage and gained another three points to bring the score to 10-0. With only 20 seconds left in the period, Kulseth escaped to gain his first point of the match and ended the period trailing 10-1. Following a takedown by Ness and a technical point for stalling against Kulseth, Ness was in position to earn a tech fall victory. However on a failed headlock, Kulseth looked like he could pull out the upset by reversing Ness and turning him to his back. Ness was able to fight off the nearfall and finish with a 14-5 victory, putting Minnesota ahead 21-6 for the dual.
141 J. Mellmer vs. Everson
D Everson, 7-0
With the first period being spent on battle for position, the pair went into the second period scoreless. With Everson choosing to start down, the Jackrabbit earned a quick point on the standup and brought the pair back to their feet. After a near takedown looked to put Mellmer in position for the pin, Everson pulled himself out before the Gopher could gain control. Everson ultimately brought down Mellmer on a messy double leg and giving the visitor a 3-0 advantage heading into the third period. Everson earned three points on the nearfall by hooking Mellmer into a cradle and extending his ride time advantage. Mellmer was able to escape but found himself trailing 6-0 late in the third. After the ride time advantage, Everson defeated Mellmer 7-0.
149 L. Mellmer vs. Cooley
D Mellmer, 5-4
After a scoreless first period, it was Mellmer who struck first, shooting in on Colley’s legs and taking him down to give him the 2-0 advantage. Cooley struck back with an escape and a takedown of his own to take the lead at 3-2 going into the third period. With a standup by Cooley bringing the score to 4-2. Firing back with a minute left in the match, Mellmer bridged a failed double leg into a successful and acrobatic takedown to tie the score at four a piece. After the takedown, Mellmer was able to ride out the remainder or the period giving him the point advantage and the victory 5-4.
157 Schlatter vs. Wermerson
Fall Schlatter, :39
Schlatter wasted no time, taking down Wermerson immediately. After a quick turn to his back, C.P. Schlatter registered a pin in 43 seconds giving Minnesota the 30-9 lead in the dual.
165 Safratowich vs. Meyer
D Safratowich, 10-1
With the first period coming to a close, Safratowich was able to takedown Meyer and turn him with only four seconds left, gaining four points and giving himself the lead. With a quick reversal in the second, the Gopher extended his lead further. With an escape by Meyer leading to yet another takedown by Safratowich, the second period ended with the Jackrabbit trailing 8-1. After ride time extended his lead to 10-1, Safratowich was victorious in the end finishing the dual and giving Minnesota the 34-9 victory over the Jackrabbits.
