Jocelyne and Monique Lamoureux each scored a goal and Jenny Lura had the shutout to lead the No. 6 University of Minnesota women’s hockey team to a 2-0 win over No. 1 Minnesota Duluth, tonight in Duluth, Minn. With the win the Gophers earn four points in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings after winning, 4-3 in overtime last evening and ended the series with a sweep.
The Gophers accomplished the first sweep over the Bulldogs on their home ice since Wisconsin swept them Jan. 6-7, 2002. Coincidentally, the last time UMD had been shutout at home also came against Minnesota when Kim Hanlon won, 3-0, last year on Nov. 18.
Minnesota scored its first even-strength goal of the series at 13:18 in the first period after scoring four power-play goals in yesterday’s 4-3 overtime win. Jocelyne Lamoureux scored her first goal as a Golden Gopher as she banked in a rebound attempt. Monique Lamoureux stole the puck and took the initial shot, which was stopped by UMD goalie Kim Martin and went off the far pipe, but Jocelyne Lamoureux was there to bury the rebound. Sophomore goalie Jenny Lura stopped all 12 shots on goal in the first stanza, while Martin had 13 saves.
The Lamoureuxs combined again at 2:09 in the second on another even-strength goal to put the Gophers up, 2-0. Monique Lamoureux scored her second goal of the season, while Jocelyne Lamoureux and Sarah Erickson each tallied the assists. Erickson took the puck off the boards and found Jocelyne Lamoureux. She centered it to Monique, who one-timed the puck to score her second goal of the year. Minnesota visited the sin bin five times during the period, including a 1:30 5-on-3 power-play opportunity, but the Gophers were able to kill of the penalties. Of the 24 UMD shots on goal allowed during the first two periods, the Bulldogs had 10 with the extra attacker.
Minnesota visited the box an additional four times during the third period and UMD was called for two penalties in the third, but neither team could find the back of the net and the game stood at a 2-0 final. The Bulldogs pulled goalie Kim Martin with 49 seconds remaining in the game, but the Gophers were able to hold off the defending national champions.
Minnesota had solid goaltending from two different athletes this weekend. Jenny Lura kept the Gophers in the game, making some key saves in the game and ended up with her third-career shutout and first against Minnesota Duluth. She blanked UMD on 34 shots, including 13 during the Bulldog power-play.
Minnesota returns home for one series when the Ohio State Buckeyes come to town, Oct. 17-18. On Friday, fans who bring in a canned or non-perishable food item will receive free admission as the Gophers attempt to break their attendance record of 3,251 set in 2007. Friday’s game is slated for a 7:07 p.m. start, while Saturday’s game is a 4:07 p.m. contest.
