Gophers Open OSU Series With an 8-1 Win

10/18/2008 12:00:00 AM | Women's Hockey

The University of Minnesota women’s hockey team had 13 skaters earn a point as the Golden Gophers defeated Ohio State University, 8-1, tonight at Ridder Arena. Jen Schoullis scored two goals, while Emily West had three assists to lead the Gopher scoring drive. In all, six players had multiple points in the win over the Buckeyes.

Monique Lamoureux scored her third goal of the season just 1:21 into the contest. Melanie Gagnon found Lamoureux along the boards as she was ready to enter the offensive zone. Lamoureux made OSU goalie Liana Bonnano commit on the shortside and carried the puck to the farside for the highlight reel goal. The Gophers added two power-play goals in the first to put the score at 3-0 after the first period. Brittany Francis banked in a follow-up from an Emily West tip at 11:40 in the first. Melanie Gagnon set up the power-play goal when she fired off a slapshot to start the play in motion. Rachael Drazan netted her first goal of the season at 13:38 in the first. Drazan scored as she placed the puck, five-hole, while West had the first assist and Gigi Marvin held the second.

Minnesota added another four goals in the second for a score of 7-0 after two periods. As the Gophers were changing lines, Francis placed a shot on goal. As Jocelyne Lamoureux was coming off the bench she found a rebound in the slot to score the goal. Jen Schoullis and Chelsey Jones connected on a two-on-one attempt at 12:22 to put the game at 5-0. Jones waited just long enough for the defenseman to commit to her and fired a cross-ice shot to Schoullis, who one-timed the puck for the goal. Schoullis scored her second goal of the game, this time at 16:20 in the second period just as a power-play attempt had expired. With her second goal, Schoullis netted a career-high two goals in a game. Laura May scored two minutes and three seconds later when she lifted the puck to the top right corner for her first goal of the season and second of her career.

Ohio State scored just its eighth shot of the game when Raelyn LaRocque got OSU on the board at 4:56 in the third period. As LaRocque was coming out the penalty box, she went across the ice and picked up the puck as she scored on a breakaway. Kelly Wild and Teal Bishop tallied the assists. Minnesota, however, put the game back to a seven-goal deficit when Terra Rasmussen scored her first goal of the season at 7:26 in the third, with the assists coming from May and Jaimie Horton.

Minnesota faced two goalies tonight in Bonnano and Facklis. Bonnano was knocked out of the game after the Gophers’ seventh goal, while Facklis allowed Rasmussen’s goal at 7:27. Alyssa Grogan allowed one goal in 12 shots to earn her second win of the season. Grogan had four saves in the first, two in the second and five in the third for 12 saves.

Minnesota and Ohio State will compete again tomorrow at 4:07 p.m.
