Gophers Get Another Balanced Attack in an 8-2 Win

For the second-straight night, the University of Minnesota women’s hockey team had 13 players earn a point as the Golden Gophers earned an 8-2 win over Ohio State, late this afternoon. With the win, the Gophers (5-1-0, 4-0-0) completed the sweep over the Buckeyes after winning, 8-1 the previous night.
On the weekend, Minnesota outscored the Buckeyes, 16-3 on the weekend and outshot OSU, 99-25. Of Minnesota’s 99 shots on the weekend, 30 came on the power play.
Minnesota scored early when Sarah Erickson netted her third goal of the year at 3:00 into the game. Jocelyne Lamoureux made a great pass as she fed a streaking Erickson towards the net. Monique Lamoureux started the play and had the second assist. Monique scored a goal of her own at 14:06 in the first. Monique netted her fourth goal of the season and second of the series when she fired a shot from the right circle and placed the puck just inside of the left post. Jen Schoullis and Erickson tallied the assists.
Minnesota did not allow a shot on goal until midway through the first period as the Gophers outshot the Buckeyes, 17-4, in the first period.
OSU responded with two goals of its own just 33 seconds into the second and again at 2:23 to knot the game at 2-2. Natalie Spooner scored on a breakaway attempt, while Laura McIntosh tied the game at 2:23. Minnesota, however, retaliated with three goals for a 5-2 lead heading into the third period. Schoullis scored her third goal of the weekend, first of the game, at 4:29 during a power-play opportunity when she banked in a goal from in front of the net. Monique Lamoureux and Erickson had assists on the power-play goal. Kelli Blankenship used her backhand to notch her first goal of the season at 6:34, with the assists coming from Schoullis and and Chelsey Jones. Minnesota’s third goal of the game came from freshman Nikki Ludwigson as she scored her first career goal and point as a Golden Gopher. Ludwigson found a hole on the short-side as Jaimie Horton and Terra Rasmussen tallied the assists.
Minnesota added to its lead when Gigi Marvin scored a power-play goal at 3:34 in the third. Rachael Drazan and Melanie Gagnon controlled the puck from the points. Drazan started the play from the right point, moving to Gagnon at the left point and passed it to Marvin, who one-timed the puck for her fourth goal of the season. Drazan had her second goal of the season when she capitalized on her own rebound attempt, while Jocelyne Lamoureux and Monique Lamoureux assist on the goal at 10:25 in the third. Jones added her first goal of her Minnesota career at 15:58 on a power-play attempt with the assists coming from Michelle Maunu and Blankenship.
In just six games for the Gophers this season, every forward has earned a point and overall, 16 of 19 skaters are on the scoreboard. Leading the pack is Monique Lamoureux with 11 points, followed by Marvin and Jocelyne Lamoureux with nine and Erickson and Gagnon with nine. On the weekend, Monique Lamoureux had six points, Jen Schoullis had five and six players had three points.
Minnesota will face Wisconsin, Oct. 24 & 26 in Madison, Wis. The Golden Gophers, who are ranked No. 2 in both polls, face the No. 1 Badgers at 2:07 p.m., at the Kohl Center. Both games next weekend will be broadcast live on the Gopher website, gophersports.com
