10/25/2008 12:00:00 AM | Women's Hockey
The No. 2 University of Minnesota women’s hockey team tied the No. 1 Wisconsin Badgers, 1-1, and won the shootout, 1-0, to take the top spot in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings. Minnesota (5-1-1 overall, 4-0-1 WCHA) holds a one-point lead heading into the series finale on Sunday. With the shootout win, the Golden Gophers have 10 WCHA points, while Wisconsin has nine on the season.
Although the Gophers killed off two penalties successfully in the first period, the Badgers capitalized on their third power-play attempt of the afternoon at 18:44 in the first period. Meghan Duggan blasted a shot from the point with the assists going to Erica Lawler and Hilary Knight.
After a scoreless second period, Minnesota tied the game at 12:05 in the third period on a short-handed attempt when Monique Lamoureux scored her fifth goal of the season. Prior to the goal, the two teams were skating four-on-four. As the Wisconsin penalty elapsed, Minnesota still held control of the puck during a brief short-handed time. Lamoureux placed the puck low past Wisconsin’s Jessie Vetter as her sister Jocelyne Lamoureux and Dagney Willey set up the play and tallied the assists.
Following Lamoureux’s goal, the two teams went scoreless for the remainder of the third and the overtime as both teams would participate in their first shootout of the season. Minnesota’s three players selected were Sarah Erickson, Gigi Marvin and Monique Lamoureux to Wisconsin’s Meghan Duggan, Brooke Ammerman and Hilary Knight. Duggan started the shootout as her shot went wide and hit the back glass. Sarah Erickson was the lone player to score during the shootout and helped the Gophers to a 1-0 win. In her first shootout, Alyssa Grogan stood strong as she saved both of the other shootout attempts from Ammerman and Knight. Marvin attempted a goal, but was saved by Vetter. After Grogan’s final save against UW, Monique Lamoureux did not attempt her shot.
From the third period on, Minnesota only allowed three shots on goal in the third period and one in the extra stanza, while the Gophers peppered Vetter with 15 shots, including six in the overtime. Overall, Minnesota dominated the shot category when the Gophers had 34 shots, while holding Wisconsin to just 15 shots on goal. Wisconsin, however, had its chances as the Badgers hit two pipes in the second and one in the third.
Sunday’s game is set for 2:07 p.m.
