Badgers Come-From-Behind to Defeat Gophers, 2-1
10/26/2008 12:00:00 AM | Women's Hockey
The No. 2 University of Minnesota women’s hockey team allowed two goals in the third period as the Wisconsin Badgers earned a 2-1 come-from-behind win over the Golden Gophers, today, in Madison, Wis. at the Kohl Center. With the win, the Badgers took a one-point lead in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings with 11 points, while Minnesota has 10. The Gophers and Badgers tied Friday’s game and Minnesota ended up winning the shootout, 1-0 for the extra point. North Dakota and Minnesota Duluth are tied for third with five points.
After a scoreless first period, Minnesota broke the scoreless tie as Jocelyne Lamoureux scored her third goal of the season at 4:32 in the second period. Lamoureux toe-dragged the puck as she beat a defender, pulled the puck back around the Wisconsin player and lifted it top-shelf, for the goal. Melanie Gagnon held the lone assist on the play. Minnesota dominated the shots as the Gophers outshot Wisconsin, 16-3 in the second period.
However, it was Wisconsin that dominated the third period and earned the win, scoring two goals. Hilary Knight scored a goal at 5:14 in the third to knot the game at 1-1. The Badgers took the lead when Erika Lawler scored a short-handed goal at 11:23 in the third period. The Gophers attempted to tie the game with less than a minute remaining as they pulled goalie Jenny Lura. Minnesota, however, could not find the net as the Badgers tangled up the Gophers with the extra attacker. Lura finished the game with 22 saves, while Vetter allowed one goal and had 27 saves.
Minnesota will look to return to the win column next week as the Gophers and St. Cloud State Huskies compete in a home-and-home series. Friday’s game is set for a 6:07 p.m. start at Ridder Arena, while Saturday’s game at 7:07 p.m.
