Minnesota centerfielder Matt Nohelty (Rothschild, Wis.) was named as one of the top 10 returning seniors to watch by Baseball America.

Last year, Nohelty received First-Team All-Big Ten honors as an outfielder for a second season in a row. He was the first outfielder to claim First-Team honors in back-to-back years since former Golden Gopher Sam Steidl did so in 2003 & 04.

In 2008, Nohelty batted .397 with 53 runs, 94 hits, four triples, 38 RBI, 24 stolen bases and a .438 on-base percentage. He finished third in the Big Ten in batting average, second hits, tied for eighth in runs, tied for fourth in stolen bases and was sixth in triples. His 94 hits were the most by a Golden Gopher since 1999, and hits .397 batting average was the highest by a Minnesota player since 2001.

Nohelty will enter the season fourth on the Golden Gophers career batting average list (.377), fourth in stolen bases (66), third on the Big Ten career batting average list (.395) and second on the career Big Ten stolen bases list (33). The only three Golden Gophers with higher batting averages higher then Nohelty are Mark Merila (.393 1991-94), Brent Gates (.387 1989-91) and Robb Quinlan (.381 1996-99).

This past summer, Nohelty was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 18th round of the Major League Baseball Draft. He decided to return for his senior season and is currently enrolled in graduate school at the University of Minnesota. Last year, he received First-Team Academic All-American honors.

Nohelty joins Scott Bittle (RHP - Ole Miss), Trevor Holder (RHP - Georgia), Kyle Thebeau (RHP - Texas A&M), Wes Musick (LHP - Houston), Pretston Guilmet (RHP - Arizona), Louis Coleman (RHP LSU), Jared Clark (1B Cal State Fullerton), Adam Warrern (RHP North Carolina) and Luke Anders (1B Texas A&M) on the “Seniors to Watch” list.
